PLAY "Tom"
Play Details
Title:Tom
Author:magicbertrand
Description:
Effective continuous delay offense with good shooting opportunities in the paint.
Very effective with young players since everyone plays in each position around the paint (not important to start with center players in their usual positions).

    Initial set up:
Spread out the floor with proper spacing.
Tall players (center or high post) do not necessarily have to start in a low or close to the basket position.
  • Graphic N°: 2

    Initial moves:
Start with both wings getting open with a V-cut.
Player with ball (here 3) passes to an open wing (here 2).
In case of deny from the defense, a back-door pass is a good option.

Switching positions after a pass from the middle to a wing:
After the pass to 2, 3 moves to the opposite corner to set a screen for 5.
4 cuts across the paint (shuffle) using 3's cut as a pick (off 3' cut, good timing is necessary).
2 looks to pass to 4 on this cut.
If 2 doesn't get the ball, he/she goes to the ballside block.

No options on the first cut:
2 passes to 5 in the middle.
3 goes wide in the opposite corner to maintain proper spacing.

Switching positions after a pass from a wing to the middle:
    After his/her pass to 5, 2 stes a downscreen for 4.
1 cuts across the paint, using 2's downscreen as a pick (off 2's cut for a downscreen).
5 looks to pass to 1 on this cut.
If 1 doesn't get the ball, he/she goes to the opposite corner, with proper spacing.
In the same time 3 comes up to the wing to respect proper spacing.

    Return to initial alignment:
2 pops out to the empty corner and we are back as in the initial set up and the play can continue as long as needed.

    Progession:
Once your young player understand the basic movements according to the passes in the 6 previous graphics, you can try to add moves and cuts after a pass from a wing to a corner.
4 passes to 2 and cuts through the paint.
2 looks to pass to 4 if D4 didn't jump to the ball on the pass from 4 to 2 (give and go principle).
If 4 doesn't get a pass, he/she sets a screen for 1 on the opposite corner.
1 uses 4's screen and cuts to the ball.
2 looks to pass to 1 near the basket.
If 1 doesn't get a pass, he comes to the block on the ballside.
  • Graphic N°: 8

If 2 couldn't pass to 4 or 1, he/she passes to 5 coming to the ball.
After his/her pass to 5, 2 sets a screen for 1, who pops out to the corner.
If D2 and D1 do not switch, 2 may be open for a pass in the paint, or 1 may be open for a good shooting opportunity from the corner.
As 5 moves close to the ball, 3 and 4 move to maintain proper spacing.
  • Graphic N°: 9

If 2 doesn't get the ball he/she cuts to the helpside corner and we are back in the initial alignment, but with the ball on the wing.
In this case, you have 2 options:

Option 1 "middle": 5 passes to 3 in order to have the ball in the middle and restart the system from the very beginning.
  • Graphic N°: 10
    loading graphic

Option 2 "shuffle": 4 cuts through the paint trying to get a pass from 5.
If he/she cannot receive the ball, he/she cuts to the ballside block and we are back in the same set as in graphic 5, and continuity may begin.
